When I see a product like a carton of eggs, and it says,
"Family Owned Business", I stand in the store's aisle, feeling great about buying, cooking with, and eating these eggs.I wonder which of the eleven kids in the family photo gathered these, or maybe it was Grandma who sat in the only chair in the field.
So, when I began working with my mother and sister on writing, illustrating, and publishing books… I didn't fully think of our little operation as a family-owned business… but it is. This feeling makes me look at the carton of eggs in a whole new light. I start to hear the voices of the kiddos fighting and the parents yelling at them to stop throwing the eggs just before the photo is taken. Then, they all go back to doing their own jobs within the business. All spread out over the hundred acres of chicken poop-nourished grassland.
This gave my hours hunched over a laptop, a pile of paint, and papers new validity.
This made me clearly see the value of my mother's business degree and my sister's editorial talent.
Both of them are powerful artists at par with me, and together, the three of us, standing shoulder to shoulder, are creating a unique family-owned business.
The books, the artwork, and the connections within our community through this business continue to impress me every day.
I want to contribute to this family in every way. My contributions are writing, illustrating, publishing, and selling in person.
My sister has been working with me on "The Witch's Cat" and has now entirely written and illustrated her book, "Am I Lost".
My mama does marketing and editing and has begun painting with oils. She hopes to be in a gallery someday soon.
This is my family-owned business. I am the founder who greatly enjoys being difficult to find.
You can find me in person every Saturday, selling my books and artwork at the Port Angeles Farmers Market. But due to another egg-related revelation, I won't be buying any more as I am allergic.
